Asafa Powell has withdrawn from the Aviva London Grand Prix.
After arriving into London on Tuesday to prepare for his race at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre tonight, the Jamaican sprinter was this morning forced to withdraw from the competition.
“I’ve had some tightness in my groin since Budapest, I had hoped that it would have cleared by now but it’s still there. I’ve been seeking treatment but had to make the decision today to withdraw. I am focusing on Daegu and as much as I’d like to run tonight, I just can’t take the risk with the major championships three weeks away,” Powell said.
“This is a tough decision as I always love to run in London, the fans here are incredible and I want to thank them for their support.”
Despite Powell missing tonight’s race, fans can look forward to an all-star cast of British and international athletes set to headline the Aviva London Grand Prix. Mo Farah (3000m), Jodie Williams (200m), Yohan Blake (100m), Mark Lewis-Francis (100m), Jenny Meadows (800m), David Rudisha (800m), Angelo Taylor (400m), Abubaker Kaki (800m), David Oliver (110m hurdles), Dayron Robles (110m hurdles), Andy Turner (110m hurdles) and Kim Collins (100m) will all feature in tonight’s action at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, while Christine Ohuruogu (400m), Sanya Richards-Ross (400m), Angelo Taylor (400m hurdles) Phillips Idowu (triple jump), Bernard Lagat (Mile) and Carmelita Jeter (100m) will take to the track on the sold-out Saturday for the final Aviva Series contest of 2011.
